Refractive Surgery

What is Refractive Surgery?

Refractive surgery is a procedure designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, often reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. A laser is utilized to reshape the corneal surface. The most common method is LASIK.

What are the types of Refractive Surgery?

In LASIK surgery a thin flap is created in the cornea. We offer both microkeratome and Intralase (laser) methods of creating the flap. An excimer laser is then used to shape the cornea according to the patient's specific needs. The flap is then carefully placed back into position. In PRK surgery the laser energy is applied to the surface of the cornea, avoiding the need for a flap. Each of these procedures have advantages depending on the particular situation.

The most important aspect of Refractive Surgery is patient selection. We do a thorough screening of every patient to minimize the chance of complications and maximize successful results. We make sure that patients have stable vision, without contraindications such as chronic dry eyes, keratoconus, or any other condition which may increase the risk of the procedure.

Think about the eye as if it were a camera. The front of the eye (the cornea and the lens) act like the lens of an expensive camera, focusing the image clearly on the retina. The retina, just like the film in a camera, records the image and sends the information along the optic nerve, to the brain.
